Yellow Sunday

Our first service in December is Yellow Week, so we’ll be meeting as normal at 10.30am for a time of worship, teaching, fellowship and a kids Christmas party on Sunday 3rd December.

James 3:17-18
… the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
Do you ever feel so angry about something that it is hard to pray? Let’s try James 3:17-18 by His grace.
May our Lord Jesus Christ be the centre of our prayers. May our prayers reflect His nature.

May we pray seeking to flow:-

In His wisdom
In His purity
In His peace
In His gentleness

In His good fruits and mercy
In His impartiality
Becoming His peace makers
Sowing His harvest of righteousness.

Christmas at Northgate

Celebrate the birth of Jesus with us this December

We love Christmas at Northgate Church! This year we have a variety of ways to engage with the church over the festive period, including the return of our Carol Services, and our outdoor service in the centre of Chester with our friends at St. Peter’s Church! Christingle Service
Sunday 10th December at 11.00am

Join us for our super-family-friendly Carol Service to celebrate Christmas!

Our Northgate Choir & Band will be leading you in some Carols and Christmas songs, and you will be invited to make your own Christingle as part of the service. All will be provided for you on the day. Children (and adults…) are welcome to arrive dressed in festive/Nativity costume if they’d like!

The service will last just over an hour, we will have refreshments available before & after the service, and lunch for the children too!

Carols at the Cross 2023

Join us for a very special outdoor carol service in our beautiful city of Chester!

Our choir will lead you in song, and we hear the Christmas story told to us. It all starts at 4.30pm at the Cross on Sunday 10th December right next to St. Peter’s Church. All are welcome!

This event is jointly hosted between St. Peter’s at the Cross and Northgate Church.

Northgate Carol Service
Sunday 17th December at 7.30pm

Our evening Carol Services are always special. Come and join us as we explore the Christmas story together and the wonder of God coming to earth.

Who will you invite to come and hear the true reason of why we celebrate Christmas and why there is a reason to be hopeful.

The service will be followed by festive refreshments of mulled wine, juice and mince pies.

‘Christmassy feeling’ is guaranteed!

The Chester Churches choir, Deo Gratias, have their Christmas Concert on Saturday 2nd December at 7.30pm at All Saints Church. Three Northgaters sing in the choir and tickets are £9 (£8 for concessions) and are available from Angelika Stevenson, Pamela Monti and David Hopper.

This week is a Purple Sunday! We will be kicking off on Sunday 26th November with Diving Deeper at 10:30am. Bring your Bible, notepad and pen. Coffee will be provided.

Little Church at 4.00pm

At 4pm we have our wonderful Little Church where we will be looking at God’s Word in a child-friendly, creative way. Come along and join in our family orientated service. All are very welcome.

Psalm 5:12 ESV

For you bless the righteous, O Lord; you cover him with favour as with a shield.

Who does God favour?
Those He has redeemed, whose hearts are toward Him, who seek Him;
Those who delight in, connect with, and give honour to Him;
Those who love Him with all their hearts and for those who seek His favour about the favour of all others.

What does the favour of God look like?
“demonstrated delight.”
“tangible evidence that a person has the approval of the Lord.”
“grace”, “undeserved favour”, “goodness”, “loving-kindness”, and “mercy”.

So you dear ones at Northgate are included! You are God’s special kids that He wants to favour. You have His grace, goodness and lovingkindness.

Let us meet at 9.30 in the bistro hall this yellow week and give thanks and proclaim His favour.

Operation Christmas Child

The shoeboxes are back! If you would like to pack a shoebox to send with Samaritan’s Purse, you can collect your box from Church on Sunday.

This week Thanksgiving Sunday
29th October 2023 (Green Sunday)

This week it’s Green Sunday, we will meet together at 10:30am for an all-age Thanksgiving Service with worship, teaching, prayer, fellowship, fun and BREAD! (Remember the clock change!!)

Yes, it is our Annual Thanksgiving Sunday (well every day is thanksgiving – but you know what I mean!). We are going to have another great time together as church family! We shall be sharing communion together – and like previous years we are asking people to bake a loaf of home-made bread and bring it along. There are some terrific bakers amongst us – so let us all have a go and let us all share each other’s baking whilst thanking Jesus for all He has done!!

Of course, Thanksgiving Sunday would not be complete without our testimonies of Thanksgiving!! Have you something for which you thank God? Please come ready to share. Even if you cannot come to the meeting in person, consider recording it and sending it to Gerald and we can arrange the rest. (gerald@northgate.org.uk)

Again, if you have any artwork, poems, prayers, craft, etc which reflect the season, then again, bring them along for all to appreciate, enjoy and be uplifted. Kids, this applies to you too!! I like the idea of Pumpkin Angels if you need any suggestions!!

The nature of Sunday is very relaxed and all about us as Church family thanking God and encouraging one another.

After all it says in 1 Corinthians 14: 26 – Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.

I like the Passion version:
Whether you share a song of praise, a teaching, a divine revelation, or a tongue and interpretation, let each one contribute what strengthens others.

We will be taking up a Thanksgiving Offering on Sunday and this will go to Crossways Hub Food Bank in Hoole. They do a magnificent job in tackling the increasing issue of food poverty.

Blue Sunday : 8th October 2023

7.00pm Evening Worship Service

This week is the second Sunday of the month (Blue Sunday), where we gather together from 7.00pm to worship our God through sung worship, and other forms of creative expressions too. Art materials are ready and waiting for your God-given creativity including: pads, paints, pastels, felt tips, pencils etc. Come and join us to put all else aside and meet with Jesus.

Garden Quarter Community Event

A community afternoon concert (all within the 20th century American genre) showcasting local talent and celebrating friends and neighbours of Chester’s Garden Quarter.

Last week, we were so pleased to introduce Nick & Sue Pengelly into our Church Community and to announce that they are joining our Leadership Team with immediate effect. Nick & Sue have a wealth of experience and gifting. Last Wednesday evening was just the beginning of Northgate’s next chapter!

Church WiFi & Network

Unfortunately, the internet server that supplies WiFi to the Church building has crashed. This is beyond our control and in spite our best efforts we have been unable to get the supplier to remedy the situation. This means we will be unable to stream our church family meeting live but we will be able to supply an audio version to church family members only at a later date.

We are so sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

Purple Sunday

Diving Deeper at 10.30am

This week is a Purple Sunday! We will be kicking off on Sunday 24th September with Diving Deeper at 10:30am, this week we will be looking at “THE FATHER HEART OF GOD”. Bring your Bible, notepad and pen. Coffee will be provided.

Little Church at 4.00pm

At 4pm we have our wonderful Little Church where we will be looking at God’s Word in a child-friendly, creative way. Come along and join in our family orientated service. All are very welcome.

Burning fervently not burning out
Why do we as a church family continue to keep on burning, fervent in prayer instead of burning out?

We meet as a church family to worship and pray. We are not alone. We are burning and fervent together.
We are together in His presence. In His presence is thanksgiving, joy, love, and renewed passion as He ignites our hearts by the power of His Holy Spirit.

7.00pm Evening Worship Service

This week is the second Sunday of the month (Blue Sunday), where we gather together from 7.00pm to worship our God through sung worship, and other forms of creative expressions too. Come and join us to put all else aside and meet with Jesus.

This week Sunday 3rd September 2023

Yellow Sunday

Great to be back in to our regular pattern of services following the summer break. We hope you are all rested and rejuvenated ready for the new term. This week is Yellow Sunday, so we’ll be meeting for our morning service on Sunday 3rd September at 10:30am in the Main Hall! Join us for a time of Worship, Word, Children’s classes, Prayer & Fellowship. Looking forward to seeing you all!

Sunday Morning Prayer at 9.30am

It is as we pray that the power of God is released amongst us. As our Shepherd God longs to tangibly love, release, heal, lead His flock. Prayer is the key to accessing all that He has for us. Come and join us at 9.30am to both listen to the Spirit and make our requests known to Him.

His promise is whatever we ask in His name, He will do. Let’s ask!

Church Zoo Trip

Saturday 2nd September

Don’t forget to sign up for the Chester Zoo family trip this coming Saturday if you want to join the group going. You will need to bring a packed lunch. If we get enough interest we may be able to obtain a Group discount. Heather says there is some financial assistance available if needed. Contact church@northgate.org.uk for further details.

Tickets are £30 adults | £22.72 children 3-17yrs (under 2’s free) … unless you already have membership, in which case entry is free. If we can get a group discount with 15 or more attending then the tickets will be £22.75 adults | £18.20 children.

Green Sunday

Throughout August each Sunday will be a Green Sunday (except for Sunday 27th which is a Bank Holiday. There will be no Sunday morning service). This week we will meet together at 10:30am for an all-age service with worship, teaching, prayer, fellowship and fun. We are going to have a great time together as church family!

Please note: there is NO prayer meeting before our service this Sunday.

Summer Program

The summer services will be very relaxed! Check out how they will look. Note – there is no Evening Worship, Diving Deeper or Little Church in August. There will be no service at all on Aug 27th (Bank Holiday weekend)

Office closed 21st – 28th August

The office will be closed for one week commencing Monday 21st of August plus the Bank Holiday Monday on the 28th August and will re-open on Tuesday, 29th August.

Church Zoo Trip

Our lovely Heather Lincoln is organising a trip for us to Chester Zoo on Saturday 2nd September. We are all invited on this family fun day out. Tickets are £30 adults | £22.72 children 3-17yrs (under 2’s free) … unless you already have membership, in which case entry is free.

Green Sunday

Sunday 13th August is Book Week!

This week it is Book Week. Following the informal style of recent weeks, we are asking everyone, (and kids, you are especially welcome) to bring in a favourite book, article, or blog to share it with the rest of us. It can be any genre of book or writing – but it should be something of which you could share briefly why you like it – or the impact it had on you.

If last week had anything to go by where we shared our reflections on the film “The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse”, then we are in for another great uplifting time on Sunday.

Are you a creative writer?

We did a Book Week last year and some people brought in pieces of writing they had written themselves. It was brilliant – so if you are someone who has engaged in any form of creative writing including poetry – we’d love you to come along this Sunday and read an extract! Spread the word too amongst friends!

At 4.15pm we will be meeting at Northgate Church to walk down to Water Tower Gardens together to have a wonderful time together. Don’t forget to bring your food for a family picnic! All are very welcome.

Sunday Prayer

Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live.
Ezekiel 37:4-5 ESV

Let us proclaim the breath of God and life where there were dead bones.

See you at the 9.30 prayer where we proclaim God’s word together. We expect to see the resurrection power of Christ in our midst.

This week Sunday 18th June 2023
Yellow Sunday

This week is a Yellow Sunday, so we’ll be meeting for our morning service on Sunday 18th June at 10:30am in the Main Hall! Join us for a time of Worship, Word, Prayer & Fellowship.

Gerald will be sharing on “Liminal Spaces” and how we deal with those times of transition where we have let go of one thing but not yet grasped the next.

Sunday Prayer

Let’s enjoy the continual refreshing as we meet together in prayer at 9.30 this yellow week as we pray according to the message on John 15, given by Ian Rossol on 4th June.

We are refreshed:-

in the vine ” I am the true vine, you are the branches” v 1,5
in the Father’s gentle hands ” each branch he tenderly lifts up” v 2.
in the Word, “if you remain in Me and My Words abide in you, you shall ask what you will and it will be done for you” v 7
in His fruitfulness, we depend entirely on Him and have come to the end of ourselves, “the branch cannot bear fruit of itself” v 5
in His love, “if you obey my commandments, you will remain in my love” v9.
in a position to receive, we are dwelling in Him. “Remain in Me and I will remain in you”. v 4.” Freely have you received, freely give.” Matt 10:8

As we live in Jesus the Vine, He flows through us to produce fruit. We can live constantly refreshed regardless of our circumstances. His heart is for us, His eye is never off us, let us learn to receive all that He wants to give each of us.

Please join us at 9.30am to pray before the throne but Northgate Church will receive all that He wants to give us. As Ian Rossol says “Let us learn to be great receivers”.

Roof Update Report

We are very thankful for the continuous good weather which has meant that progress has been excellent in re-roofing the back hall. Even better news is that during the thunderstorms and torrential downpours, we did not have any leaks whatsoever!

We are awaiting for the first of the grant payments from FCC Communities Foundation. It should be in the region of £30,000, for which we are very grateful.

The Glorious! House Group meet every Blue Sunday 10.30am – 12.30pm in the Main Hall. Everyone is welcome. Please come and join us as we worship God together African style!

7.00pm | Extended Evening Worship Service
“God’s Presence in the problem”

To support us in our corporate worship time on Sunday evening, this week part of our service will focus in on the theme: ‘God’s presence in the problem’.

Some of the songs will have this theme within them, including a new one I’ve co-written. Be encouraged to bring any literature, readings or artwork around this topic of engaging with God during times of struggle, and/or engage with it during the service as the Holy Spirit leads.

Don’t forget that we will have the art station setup too so you may feel prompted during the evening to get creative! We are really looking forward to being together. See you at 7pm!

Psalm 107 : 1-2

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever!
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
whom he has redeemed from trouble.

Let us gather at 9.30 on Sunday this yellow week, and give thanks for His faithfulness. He is the one who redeems us from trouble. He is the chain breaker. Let us stand together and proclaim Him as the One whose word breaks the rock in pieces.

Resound Worship | New album!

Dear church family,

You may know that I am part of the Resound Worship songwriting community, a collective that resources grass-roots songwriters serving their local churches. We sing many of Resound’s songs in our Sunday gatherings and my colleagues there have been a tremendous source of help & encouragement into my own songwriting, in turn enriching the sung worship within Northgate. Resound Worship’s next album project is about to be recorded and is an ambitious double album of contrasting but complementary themes of lament and hope. Our aim is to resource the worldwide church with songs that are incredibly singable, both theologically rich and worshipful yet grounded in the reality of life. Songs that deal with both grief and struggle, victory and hope.

I’m delighted that two songs I’ve written are going to be included on one of the records, including ‘When God’s Perfect Plans’, which is a song formed from within our own Northgate Church family. We’re in the final week of crowdfunding the albums, so if anybody would like to support the project by buying the record ahead of its release, feel free to check out the links below for more info or contact me if you’d like any more info on andy@northgate.org.uk

When they gathered together the place was shaken by the power of the Holy Spirit. They went forward with boldness to live for Christ and to share the good news of Christ. Acts 4:31

As we gather together at 9.30am to pray, let us gather around Him in faith to see what He will do. Our God wants to heal the sick, bind up the broken hearted, set the captives free and preach Good News to all.

Resound Worship | New album!

Dear church family,

Blue Sunday : 12 March 2023
10.30am | The Glorious! House Group

The Glorious! House Group meet every Blue Sunday 10.30am – 12.30pm in the Main Hall. Everyone is welcome. Please come and join us as we worship God together African style!

7.00pm | Evening Worship Service

This week is the second Sunday of the month (Blue Sunday), where we gather together from 7.00pm to worship our God through sung worship, and other forms of creative expressions too. Come and join us to put all else aside and meet with Jesus.

Back Hall Roof Repair Update

Finally it’s all happening! The scaffolding has now been erected (Abbi Access) and the roof repair (RM Roofing and Construction) is starting – great news!

Of course, everyone’s safety is of paramount importance. The scaffolding goes right around the building, including in the car park of the student block next to us – Fontessa House – and the Lorne Street houses at the top of the alleyway leading down to the Studio.

We have asked and been given, permission for access to these properties and will ensure we remain ‘good neighbours’ to the owners and tenants while the work progresses. The roofers are fully engaged in this process.

There will be working platforms on the scaffolding right around the building and the planking will be sheeted-up to protect anyone below. There are safety/warning notices all around the scaffolding to ensure pedestrians are fully aware.

Although the site is safe, we would ask that you would please take extra care when you are on the site and be especially careful to ensure that any children are supervised, especially around the Back Hall.

Both doors to the Back Hall and the door into the Studio will be accessible.
There will be signs indicating that there will be no way through from Lorne St to Northgate St (front of Main Building) and vice versa, in order to deter casual passers-by using it as a ‘cut through’ (which many do). However, this does not affect access to the buildings themselves.
Linda has informed regular users of the building of the work that is being done.
The car-park is in effect not in use. It will have some equipment in it from time to time and is significantly reduced in size as scaffolding is footed in it.

This is a yellow week where we always gather at 9.30 in the bistro hall for prayer.

The Lord has said, You are mine. You can come into the place of prayer at any time. You may come into My presence. You may ask in my name.

His door is open for you.
Will he say No? We have a guaranteed Yes!
Will He say your prayers are accepted, spiritual, and effective? Yes.
What a privilege.
His door is open. He is waiting for us to ask. Come at 9.30.

Garden Quarter Street Festival
Saturday 6th May | 2 – 11pm

The Garden Quarter is planning for a street party to mark King Charles’ Coronation on Saturday 6th May from 2pm til 11pm . There will be local traders and their street food, the school, university, local choirs and bands providing live music into the night, a ceilidh, pet parade, fancy dress competition!

To get involved, games will be running from 2-5pm in the afternoon and we hope to have some volunteers from the school to help us run them. A New Covering for Northgate Church

The Back Hall is having a new roof! The scaffolding will be erected around the back hall on 2^nd May and will remain in place until the end of July. The full church site is still usable with proper Health & Safety measures being put in place. No – you will not need to attend church in a hard hat!!

There is of course a shortfall of funds which we, as a community must raise ourselves. Whilst the Trust has put some funds aside in anticipation, any further donations would be hugely welcome and appreciated. This can be done via an online transfer via the NGC donation page on www.northgate.org.uk “Roof Fund” or by Bank transfer: 60-40-08 03363996 “Roof Fund”.

Northgate is incredibly blessed to have its own building. We cannot take it for granted. Whilst we have not needed to spend vast sums of money on the property for many years, we do need to nurture our faithful building now! It serves the purposes of God and is crucial to our future as we reach into our communities.

On the 3rd May at 7.00pm LICC are in Northgate Church Chester to help us see our daily life and work through God’s eyes – and explore how we can partner together to make a difference at this pivotal moment in our culture. Because with Christ, every encounter, every task, and every situation brims with divine possibility.

The event begins with light refreshments. After that, we’ll share stories, research, videos, and Bible thoughts that capture the essence of what we do and how we can help you be an authentic disciple of Jesus right where you are. We’ll also interview folks from the local area to hear how Jesus is working in their everyday.

Everyone is invited! Whether you’ve been involved with LICC for decades or only just heard about us.

Begin Life’s Greatest Adventure – Now!

The Alpha Course is a brilliant course for anyone wanting to find out more about Christianity, or indeed Christians wanting to reinforce some of the foundations of their faith. So many people have found answers to some of life’s biggest questions and have been greatly impacted.

Of late, the Alpha Course has produced a new revised course called the Alpha Film Series. The course is just 8 weeks long (with a break for half term) and is presented as a series of 26 minute videos from different parts of the world.

We are pleased to announce that Northgate Church is supporting the latest Alpha Course in Chester. It will be held at St Peter’s Church – at The City Centre Cross. It will start on May 4^th at 7:30pm with a shared dinner (free of charge) and followed by a presentation and then group discussions. It is very friendly and caters for all people wherever they are on their spiritual journey. It would be wonderful if we could pull together a table of at least six people.

It will finish off with an optional longer session one Saturday where people can explore the life changing power of the Holy Spirit.

St. Mark’s Church is hosting an evening of prayer for the persecuted Church on Tuesday, 2nd May led by Henrietta Blyth CEO of Open Doors UK&I. All are welcome to join with refreshments from 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start, finishing at 9.00pm. Braveheart is a conference for all women at all stages of life, designed to encourage and equip you to seize hold of your best life. On 26th and 27th May you are invited to come along to a new national women’s conference in the Liverpool ACC arena. Come and join with women from all over this nation and beyond as we seize this opportunity to alter the atmosphere and live a life worth living.

At 4pm we have our wonderful Little Church where we will be looking at God’s Word in a child-friendly, creative way. Come along and join in our family orientated service. All are very welcome.

On the 3rd May at 7.00pm LICC are in Northgate Church Chester to help us see our daily life and work through God’s eyes – and explore how we can partner together to make a difference at this pivotal moment in our culture. Because with Christ, every encounter, every task, and every situation brims with divine possibility.

The event begins with light refreshments. After that, we’ll share stories, research, videos, and Bible thoughts that capture the essence of what we do and how we can help you be an authentic disciple of Jesus right where you are. We’ll also interview folks from the local area to hear how Jesus is working in their everyday.

Everyone is invited! Whether you’ve been involved with LICC for decades or only just heard about us.

Garden Quarter Street Festival
Saturday 6th May | 2 – 11pm

The Garden Quarter is planning for a street party to mark King Charles’ Coronation on Saturday 6th May from 2pm til 11pm . There will be local traders and their street food, the school, university, local choirs and bands providing live music into the night, a ceilidh, pet parade, fancy dress competition!

To get involved, games will be running from 2-5pm in the afternoon and we hope to have some volunteers from the school to help us run them. It would be great to have some Northgate-ers to support the children in this. Can you give an hour of your afternoon to help with this? Get in touch with Jo Nutt if you’re interested.

This week is a Yellow Sunday, so we’ll be meeting for our morning service on Sunday 16th April at 10:30am in the Main Hall! Join us for a time of Worship, Word, Prayer & Fellowship.

Sunday Prayer | Open Door

This is a yellow week where we always gather at 9.30 in the bistro hall for prayer.

The Lord has said, You are mine. You can come into the place of prayer at any time. You may come into My presence. You may ask in my name.

His door is open for you.
Will he say No? We have a guaranteed Yes!
Will He say your prayers are accepted, spiritual, and effective? Yes.
What a privilege.
His door is open. He is waiting for us to ask. Come at 9.30.

Our Easter Family Service will take place on Sunday, 9th April at 10.30am, there will be no childrens work but we will gather together as the whole family to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection.

Sunday Prayer

Keys

God has given us access to Himself.
He has given us keys and invited us to come in to His presence and ask.

Come and join us for this Sunday morning’s prayer meeting as we gather to seek the face of God our Father. He longs to encounter each one and pour Himself into us. Great is His heart towards all His people In the Northgate Church Family.

We meet 9.30-10.00 am in the Back Hall for prayer that the God of heaven will meet with us as we corporately come into His Presence, and that His kingdom will come and his will be done.
